What is a Content Delivery Network?

A content delivery network allows enterprises to ensure that their websites and critical applications will operate with high bandwidth, no matter the geographic location. Often applications and websites are accessed at peak times or something occurs that causes a heavy influx of traffic, and unless a content delivery network is in place, often those sites or applications will crash. A CDN is a series of geographically dispersed servers where the same content is copied and stored, and the end user accesses the right server based on geographic proximity. Essentially, when the content is requested, content delivery automatically directs the end user to the closest geographic server improving transfer rates and protecting the system from “spikes” in traffic from all locations or “spikes” from one geographic location. Content delivery service allows for faster load speeds for content such as web objects, mobile media, applications, software, gaming and audio and video streaming including HD streaming. The three main content delivery approaches include HTTP redirection, IP redirection and DNS redirection.
